It may come as a shocking surprise to you, that Many post-pubescent girls in many Kenyan schools have "NEVER WORN PANTIES" since they were born
It becomes quite an embarrassing experience for many of these girls during their regular monthly cycles, as they get laughed at and mocked by their classmates. Some of these girls are usually so deeply ashamed; they chose never to return to school, as the scar of embarrassment can last a very long time
Other girls find it hard to concentrate in class during such times and may take a "menstrual leave" from their class which usually leads to degraded performance in school.
There are also a category of girls who get married off, as they are considered to be "ready to bear children"
in some communities. Sanitary Pads are more of a luxury item as opposed to a necessity in many rural and urban homes in Kenya.
A single sanitary pad costs about USD 0.35, whenever we donate sanitary pads, we also teach the young girls how to make Re-usable sanitary pads, to help their friends, siblings and relatives.
With our panties and sanitary pads program,
Our main aim is:
- To keep the girl child in school. Through provision of sanitary pads which are a primary - necessity for every developing young girl
- Educate society on the rights of the girl child to stay in school and Not get married off young.
- To educating the girl child about her body, to understand it’s a natural stage in development, and know how to remain chaste as she matures into a beautiful woman
- Also educating society on the rights of the girl child, and encouraging them to return the school girls who dropped out of school because of pregnancy or early marriage to return back
Through your support as partners, we can help change the perspective of society; make the girl child raise her arm straight and smile in the classroom even during her wet days
. We can make her be proud of her developing body
and in time become another great woman in society.
